Dates in Spanish can be expressed in several ways and using different formats:

9 de mayoMay 9
9 de mayo de 2024May 9, 2024
nueve de mayo de dos mil veinticuatroMay nine, two thousand and twenty-four

Quick tip: In Spanish, the day comes first, followed by the month: 03/04 means April 3 (and not: March 4).

Hoy es viernes 16 de septiembre de 2024.
Today is Friday, September 16, 2024.

La fecha límite para la tarea es el 5 de abril.
The deadline for the assignment is April 5.

Hoy es 24 de abril.
Today is April, 24.

¿El examen es el próximo viernes?
Is the test next Friday?

How to write the date in Spanish

  • Day comes first.
In Spanish, the day comes first, before the month. The cardinal number is used:

3 de junio
June 3.

  • Months and years preceded by “de.
The elements of a date are separated by the preposition de, which introduces both months and years, like this:
    day + de + month + de + year

5 de febrero de 2004.
February 5, 2004.

  • Number format: day also comes first.
To write the date with numbers in Spanish the dd/mm/yyyy format is used. If obvious, the first two numbers of the year may be left out:

05/02/22
February 5, 2022

02/08/1980
August 2, 1980

11/10/2024
October 11, 2024

  • Days and months not capitalized.
Unlike in English, the days and months in Spanish are not capitalized:

miércoles
Wednesday

enero
January

Note: In very formal contexts, like letters and formal documents, dates are written in full, just the way they are said. The name of the day may be included at the beginning:
martes nueve de julio de mil ochocientos dieciséis (Tuesday, July 9, 1816).

Days of the week in Spanish

The week in Spanish starts on lunes (Monday). Days in Spanish are written in lowercase:

The word en (meaning “in”) introduces a time adverbial when it is used next to a month:
