  • The days of the week in Spanish are not capitalized

¡Nos vemos el viernes!

Exception: when they are part of proper names, including public holidays, festivities, streets, and other names: Jueves Santo (Holy Thursday), Domingo de Pascuas (Easter Sunday).

  • The days of the week in Spanish are masculine. This means they are preceded by a masculine article, which can be either el (singular) or los (plural), depending on the context:

Juan fue a Madrid el jueves.
Juan went to Madrid on Thursday.

Lisa toma clases de español los lunes.
Lisa takes Spanish lessons on Mondays.

Lunes, martes, miércoles, jueves, and viernes are both the singular and plural forms. For sábado and domingo, a final -s is added to form the plural.

  • The days of the week in Spanish are not preceded by a preposition

Jugaré tenis el domingo. (and not: Jugaré tenis en el domingo.)
I’m playing tennis on Sunday.

  • Days of the week can either go at the beginning or at the end of the sentence

El sábado veremos una película / Veremos una película el sábado.
We’re going to watch a movie on Saturday.

How to abbreviate the days of the week in Spanish

The days of the week in Spanish can be abbreviated by shortening the name of the day and adding a period. In informal written contexts, like leaflets detailing the frequency of an activity for example, a one or two-letter code may be used instead:

To say and ask what day it is in Spanish, the following expressions are used:

Es lunes.
It’s Monday.

Hoy es sábado.

With the expressions hoy es, mañana es, es, the article el is not used:
