X is the twenty-fifth letter and the twentieth consonant of the Spanish alphabet. It is one of the least frequent letters in the Spanish language.
Tomaremos un taxi a la estación.

The letter W may appear in initial, middle, or final position in the word:
- Words starting with X: xenón (xenon), xenofobia (xenophobia), xilografía (xylography).
- Words with X in them: experiencia (experience), exuberante (lush), saxofón (saxophone).
- Words ending in X: tórax (thorax), box (boxing), dúplex (duplex apartment).
Pronunciation tip: The Spanish letter X may have three different pronunciations:
- It is pronounced /ks/ as in English, when it appears between vowels, word-final position, or at the end of a syllable preceding a consonant:
éxodo, Félix, extranjero - It is pronounced /s/ in word initial position:
xilofonista, xenoglosia, xerocopiar - It is pronounced /h/, much like the h in “hot”, in words containing an old spelling form:
México, Oaxaca, Ximena

Spelling tips: X must be used in:
- Words starting with the sequence ex- followed by -pr-, -pl-. h, or a vowel: expresión (expression), explotar (to explode), exhaustivo (thorough), exigente (demanding).
- Words starting with the prefixes ex-, exa-, exo-, extra-, hexa-, maxi-, xeno-, xero-, xilo-: exmarido (ex-husband), exógeno (exogenous), hexágono (hexagon).
