Spanish words with W

W is the twenty-fourth letter and the nineteenth consonant of the Spanish alphabet. It is one of the least frequent letters in the Spanish language, appearing only in words of foreign origin.

The letter W may appear in initial, middle, or final position in the word:

  • Words starting with W: wok, whisky, watt.
  • Words with W in them: taekwondo, software, kiwi (kiwifruit).
  • Words ending in W. They have a very low occurrence: show, Glasgow, bungalow.

Pronunciation tip: The Spanish /w/ sound is pronounced as /gu/ or /u/:

wafle, sándwich, Hawái

Exception: It may be pronounced /b/ in words of German origin:

wagneriano

Fun fact: Though the Real Academia Española recommends the name uve doble for the Spanish letter W, other names are accepted. In many Latin American countries, W is referred to as doble ve or ve doble (double v). In Mexico and the Caribbean countries, it is called doble u.
