The letter H may appear in initial, middle, or final position in the word:

  • Words starting with H: harina (flour), helado (ice cream), huella (footprint).
  • Words with H in them: exhibición (exhibition), vehículo (vehicle), adhesivo (adhesive).
  • Words ending in H. They are very infrequent, usually being interjections or words of foreign: oh (oh), bah (huh), match (match).

Pronunciation tips: As a general rule, Spanish H is a silent letter:
hoy, hacha, anhelo

However, H is pronounced when:

  • It is part of the digraph ch, which is pronounced much like the “ch” in “chair”. This is a frequent digraph in Spanish:
    chaleco, leche, ducha
  • It is part of the digraph sh, which is pronounced much like the “sh” in “ship”. This digraph only appears in words of foreign origin, particularly English:
    show, flash, short
  • It appears in initial position in words of foreign origin, in which case it is aspirated and pronounced much like the English /h/ sound (though stronger):
    Hawai, hardware, hippie
Spanish words that start with h including drawings and English translation.

Important: Since in most cases H is silent in Spanish, special attention should be paid to spelling rules when writing. In some cases, homophones or “equally-sounding” pairs of words are only distinguished through the H spelling:

  • hola (hello), ola (wave)
  • honda (deep, feminine) / onda (wave)
  • hecho (participle form of the verb hacer, meaning “to do”) / echo (present form of the verb echar, meaning “to throw”)
